Google Maps Mania never seems to run out of new Google Maps mashups to discover. But one of the latest, Earth Tools, is not your average mashup. It has a nifty contour map overlay.
The screen grab above shows the Chicago Basin of Weminuche Wilderness Area, which is where I’m headed in about a month.
The contours are handled differently than the way Backcountry Maps does it, a site I looked at several weeks ago. On that site, USGS topo maps replace the Google map background.
Although Earth Tools has a clean look and uses clever technology, the topo maps at Backcountry Maps provide more detail, making them a more useful means of seeing geologic features.
