I hope to lead a backpack in the Smokies. There should be an article in the CMC eNews something like this:
Smokey Mountains: Backpack - 8 6000 foot peaks - May 8-11
Complete the CMC's SB6K Challenge. This 4 day, 3 night backpack will go to the top of the 8 otherwise very difficult to get to peaks in the SB6K Challenge. Usually the Backpack is a very difficult 3 day backpack which scares some people off. This backpack spreads the work out over 4 days also reducing backtracking. It's about 39 miles total - 6.6, 9.2, 11.1 and 10(or 12) miles each day. Details are in the hike map document on the website: http://www.carolinamtnclub.com/./Hiking/Maps/0651-Smokies4daySB6K.pdf . Charlie Ferguson will lead the hike - email him if you are interested. Priority will be given to those who have not been to these peaks before. There is a limit of 8 on the backpack. We will stay in shelters each night so there is no need to carry a tent, unless you want to. The hike is #651: http://www.carolinamtnclub.com/hikedetails.asp?number=651 .
We will organize mostly via email. If there is a need we will organize a planning meeting.

If you are interested and you need help planning (food, equipment, etc.) let me know.

FYI: May 1, 2009, Bryson City,NC is holding a Horace Kephart Day. The day begins at the cemetery where HK is buried. From there events will continue at the Calhoun House, Luke Hyde, owner. This will be a wonderful day, celebrating a man admired by so many. I will be one of the guest speakers.

Ronnie, perhaps you can make it to Bryson City!!

There are rooms for rent at the Calhoun which is a very nice Inn.

For more information, go the the Bryson City Chamber of Commerce website and possibly contact George Ellison who is the main speaker of the day.

If I'm in the wilderness enjoying nature, escaping from noise and pollution... and I come across a person talking on a cellphone for non-emergency reasons... I will grab that cellphone out of the person's hands and irretrievably shove it far up their a&&.

I agree with William; I've been on many hikes in the park and seen people with their dogs on the trail. The restriction is not just for other hikers, but also for the dogs. If you have a bear encounter you can usually get out of it unscathed. With a dog, however, you might not be able to control your pet and it could get killed and/or provoke the bear to attack you. Rules are usually made for good reasons; I think we should respect them. Also I think his poke at the guy's attire was just good-natured; I've seen some pretty funny stuff worn in the park, and I've even looked funny at times as I choose comfort over looks.

Dera Libby,
Thanks for writing. I just have been serching for family tree "stuff" concerning the Kephart name. Your inclusion of the names of your grandfather and great grandfather were very helpful.
I was probably 5 years old when my father took us to MountKephart. I remember portions of that trip very vividly. I can only assume the Ice Water Springs shelter is where we also stayed, for I remember Dad hanging a six pack of canned Cokes from a limb in the water there near the shelter.
I know very little about the Kephart's, though I refer people all the time to some of the things of Horace's Our Southern Highlanders often. It was a tryly eye-opening view into a time, a people, and a location that I had no idea about before. One caption under a picture of a lady of the mountains, who I really thought was more like a man, said, "She knows no other lot." Your great grandfather was an insightful individual.

Your grandfather's name caught my attention, as if I've heard mom and dad mention it before. I would appreciate some correspondence about some of your family tree if that is possible(kephart@bellsouth.net).

Thanks,
Ronnie Kephart
