Just settled in for a long winter’s nap

The local newspaper featured an article today about a National Guard soldier just back from Iraq who took the job of off-season caretaker at the Mt. LeConte Lodge.

He began his four-month tour of duty on top of Mt. LeConte just a few days before I hiked up there.

This made me glad I went up a few days after that snowfall:

“It took Levon and Len Gassett of Meigs, Ga., a little more than seven hours to reach the lodge. Although the couple had made numerous visits to LeConte Lodge, this was their first time trudging through the wind and snow.”
